How we pick

Last updated · By The [BRAND] team

Every recommendation on this site comes from the same process, whether it appears in a buying guide, a comparison, or your quiz results. Here is exactly how it works.

Our sources

We are a research-based site. We have not personally tested every product we recommend, and we never pretend otherwise. Our picks draw on:

  • Manufacturer specifications: boiler type, heat-up time, steam system, portafilter size, grind settings, dimensions, and water tank capacity.
  • Owner reviews: patterns across many reviews and long-running owner discussions, with attention to reliability and common complaints rather than single glowing or angry reviews.
  • Retailer data: availability in the US, warranty terms, and support from specialty retailers.

If we ever use a product ourselves, the page will say so plainly.

What we look for

  1. Fit for a specific person. A great machine for an experienced home barista can be a frustrating one for a beginner. We match products to who they suit, not to an abstract “best.”
  2. The whole setup. An espresso machine is only as good as its grinder. We recommend machines and grinders as pairs, and count the grinder in your budget.
  3. Honest downsides. Every product lists real drawbacks so you can rule it out quickly.
  4. Price range, not price. We group products into price tiers and send you to retailers for the current price.
  5. Support and availability. We favor products sold and supported by established US retailers.

How the quiz works

The quiz uses a transparent scoring model. Each answer adds weight to product attributes: how hands-on a machine is, its milk system, its footprint, and its price tier. The highest-scoring machine that fits your whole-setup budget wins, then we pair it with a grinder from that machine’s compatible list. Super-automatic machines and machines with a built-in grinder need no separate grinder.

Your results also include a cheaper alternative, an upgrade path, and a bean subscription that suits your type. Your answers live only in the page address, so you can bookmark or share your results. We do not store them.

How we handle money

We earn commissions from some retailer links. Commission rates are not part of our criteria and we do not sell placements. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Update schedule

  • Every product is reviewed at least every six months.
  • We update sooner when a product is discontinued or replaced, or when a reader reports a problem.
  • Each page shows its last updated date at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Do you test every product hands-on?

No. Our recommendations are based on manufacturer specs, owner reviews, and retailer data. If we have used a product ourselves, the page says so explicitly.

Do affiliate commissions affect your picks?

No. Products are chosen and ranked on fit for the reader. Commission rates are not part of the criteria, and we do not accept paid placements.

Why don't you show prices?

Espresso gear prices change often and vary by retailer. Instead of showing a number that may be wrong, we show a price range and link to retailers so you see the current price.

How often are recommendations updated?

We review every product at least every six months, and sooner when a model is discontinued, replaced, or a reader reports a problem. Each page shows when it was last updated.
